Belemnite Anatomy and Physiology

Belemnites were marine cephalopods that lived during the Mesozoic era. Their anatomy consisted of a long, bullet-shaped shell called a guard, a conical phragmocone, and a soft body inside. The guard was composed of calcite and acted as a buoyancy organ, allowing the belemnite to control its depth in the water column. The phragmocone contained chambers filled with gas or liquid to aid in buoyancy as well.

The soft body of the belemnite included a head with well-developed eyes and a beak-like structure for feeding. They also had a series of arms with suckers for catching prey. Their physiology allowed them to swim efficiently and quickly capture their prey. Belemnites were important predators in the ancient oceans and played a crucial role in the marine ecosystem during their time.
