Belemnites were ancient marine invertebrates that lived during the Mesozoic Era, from the Early Jurassic to the Late Cretaceous period. These creatures resembled modern-day squids, with a long, bullet-shaped body and a hard, internal shell known as a rostrum. Belemnites were predatory carnivores that used their tentacles to capture prey.

One of the most distinctive features of belemnites was their rostrum, a cone-shaped structure made of calcium carbonate. This shell-like structure served as a buoyancy aid and also provided protection for the soft parts of the belemnite’s body. The rostrum is often the only part of the belemnite that fossilizes, leading to the common misconception that belemnites were similar to modern-day nautiluses.
