Belemnites: Lost Creatures of the Sea
Belemnites were ancient marine creatures that lived during the Mesozoic Era, alongside dinosaurs. These cephalopods were squid-like in appearance, with a hard, bullet-shaped shell called a rostrum. Belemnites used their shells for buoyancy control and protection, and they were skilled predators, using their tentacles to catch fish and other small prey.
Despite their abundance in the fossil record, belemnites went extinct around 65 million years ago, likely due to environmental changes at the end of the Cretaceous Period. Their fossils are found all over the world, providing valuable insights into the ancient marine ecosystems of the past.
