Belemnites: the enigmatic marine creatures

Introduction

Belemnites are fascinating marine creatures that lived during the Mesozoic Era, around 200 to 66 million years ago. These enigmatic creatures are often compared to modern-day squids and cuttlefish due to their similar appearance and lifestyle. However, belemnites have a unique place in the fossil record, with their distinctive bullet-shaped shells providing valuable insights into the ancient oceans they once inhabited.

Physical Characteristics

Belemnites were cephalopods, a class of mollusks that also includes octopuses and nautiluses. They had a long, slender body with tentacles and a beak-like mouth, which they used to capture prey. One of the most distinctive features of belemnites is their internal shell, known as a «guard.» This guard was composed of calcite and had a conical shape, resembling a bullet or torpedo.
