They inhabited shallow coastal waters and open oceans, where they played a key role in the marine ecosystem as both predator and prey.

Extinction

Belemnites were highly successful marine animals that existed for over 130 million years. However, like many other groups of organisms, they were unable to survive the mass extinction event that occurred at the end of the Cretaceous Period, about 65 million years ago. The exact cause of their extinction is still a topic of debate among scientists, but theories include climate change, competition with other marine organisms, and the impact of a large asteroid or comet.
