Belemnites: the fossilized remains of cephalopods

Introduction

Belemnites are fascinating creatures that once roamed the Earth’s oceans millions of years ago. Belemnites were abundant during the Mesozoic Era, which lasted from approximately 252 to 66 million years ago. These creatures are closely related to modern-day squids, cuttlefish, and octopuses, belonging to the class Coleoidea.

Physical Characteristics

This guard was a hard, bullet-shaped structure made of calcite that provided support and protection for the animal. Belemnites also had a unique adaptation known as a hyponome, a muscular structure that allowed them to jet through the water by expelling water through a funnel-like opening. This adaptation made them efficient predators in their underwater environment.
